The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is an independent U.S. government agency regulating the commodity and derivatives markets. Established in 1936, the CFTC protects market participants from fraud and manipulation, promotes market integrity, and reduces systemic risk. Overseeing futures, options, and swaps trading, the CFTC also regulates exchanges, clearinghouses, and brokers. Led by a chairman and four commissioners, the CFTC's mission is to ensure fair, efficient, and transparent markets.
